South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) issued retrenchment notice to 600 employees on Thursday 18th of June,2020.
In 2019, SABC had plans of dropping 981 full-time employees and 1,200 freelancers but later diverted.
New system has been revealed by the broadcaster termed as ”New Target Operating Model” for the betterment of the process. It’s aimed at transforming SABC into a financial sustainable, self-sufficient and fit for purpose public broadcaster.
According to Seapolelo, SABC is presently unable to pay debt, and relies on state bailouts. Therefore, undertaking these retrenchments in order to fulfill its public mandate of serving millions of South Africans who rely on it with educational, informative and entertaining content.
