A 19-year-old KwaZulu-Natal mother dies after being assaulted in Sweetwaters, outside Pietermaritzburg, on Monday.
According to the provincial department of social development, the young mother of one, Akhona Mncube returned to her home on Sunday after been beaten by a man allegedly known to her. The brutal assault resulted to internal bleeding.
On Monday, her 29-year-old partner went with her to see a doctor but on returning home, she complained about a headache and died shortly.
Members of Umzansi Youth in Business (UYB), who visited Mncube, found her lifeless body and alerted police.
KwaZulu-Natal social development MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza conveyed her condolences to her family members and also added that the circumstances leading to Mncube’s death were cruel and there is no justification whatsoever to assault or murder women and children.
Police spokesperson Col Thembeka Mbele confirmed the incident.
“It is alleged that on July 19 2020, a 19-year-old female was assaulted by a known male at Sweetwaters and she sustained injuries all over the body. She was certified dead the following day. A case of murder was opened at Plessislaer police station for investigation. Police arrested a 29-year-old suspect and he will appear in the Pietermaritzburg magistrate’s court soon.”
