Mapiti Matsena alleged murderer remanded in custody

A 29-year-old man has been accused of killing Gauteng Provincial Legislature member, Mapiti Matsena when he was with his family members in their Pretoria North home on Wednesday night, 15th of July, 2020. He was attacked and stabbed multiple times to death two days before his 54th birthday.


The suspect has been identified as Francis Monoko Thoka. He abandoned his bail application after appearing briefly before the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 20 July 2020.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said the case was postponed for further police investigation and to explore the possibility of the case being heard in the high court.

“Thoka abandoned his bail application and the matter was remanded to August 24 2020 for Director of Public Prosecutions’ instruction in respect of the matter potentially being heard at the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria and further investigation,” NPA Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said.

According to Pretoria News, Thoka is a relative of Matsena and had even stayed with Matsena at some point.

ANC spokesperson, Pule Mabe said the party, its alliance partners, the mass democratic movement and all freedom-loving people of South Africa were devastated by Matsena’s killing.

The detectives are yet to discover the motive for killing Matsena but appeals to anyone who may have any information on the crime to please contact the SAPS via crime stop on 086 00 10111.
