A 51 year old family friend has been sentenced to two life imprisonment after raping a minor.
Amor van Greunen, 51, was sentenced to two life imprisonment terms in the Port Elizabeth Regional Court on Tuesday 21 July for the rape of a 15-year-old girl.
Van Greunen and his wife were frequent visitors at the safe haven were the minor stayed with her mother and younger brother, they go there to perform charitable deeds and they got attracted to the girl.
In 2019, the couple grew fond of the girl and often invited her to their home to spend weekends with them. A parent-daughter relationship was developed, she even confided in them and told them that she got raped by her uncle when she was 10.
The relationship soon got shattered when Van decided to bring her home when his wife was away.
The regional spokesperson Eastern Cape division, Anelisa Ngcakani said between 26 and 27 July, Van came to fetch the girl, he brought her clothes and alcohol and encouraged her to drink. After that, he raped her twice. The girl was able to get help by contacting her teacher through a whatsapp message. Her teacher rushed to the man’s house to fetch her. She also reported the issue to the police and he was arrested immediately.
The court finally sentenced him to two life imprisonment which is to run concurrently.
