Five years and five court orders- still no water in Limpopo villages

After five years of filing lawsuits and five court orders, residents of villages in Limpopo still complain of having no access to water.


The indigent residents of five villages in Flag Boshielo West, Limpopo, say they still have almost no access to water.

The residents expressed that they have had enough and they want the acting municipal manager of the Sekhukhune District Municipality to be arrested and detained for “wilful contempt of court”.

They brought their matter to the North Gauteng High court and the urgent application was heard by Judge David Fuorie this week.

Although, the judgement was reserved.

The residents were represented by the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) attorney Ariella Scher.

She said the community had secured five court orders since 2015 with four of them calling on the municipality to provide them with water.

“To date, they are still without a reliable water source,” she said.

She said the situation became worse during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The was no water available to follow the necessary measures needed to curb the spread of the virus.

She also made it known that the court orders were taken “by consent” but the municipality ignored them.
