A man has been arrested for shooting his wife.
A 30-year-old wife was allegedly shot and killed by her 33-year-old husband in the early hours of Monday morning.
The incident happened in Birch Acres, Kempton Park.
The husband said he shot his wife because he thought she was an intruder.
However, the man was arrested and appeared in court on Wednesday.
Relatives of the victim, Hlengiwe Masango suspects that it was a case of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).
“When I arrived at the scene, we found that she had been shot twice on the chest, and he claims he thought there was an intruder in the house. My cousin was fully dressed; it seems they were having an argument. He lied with this story to cover up,” a relative Sine Mhlongo alleged on Wednesday.
Mhlongo added that she noticed her cousin was behaving strangely at times. Sometimes, she will be unavailable or when her husband calls, she would ignore anything she was working on and immediately go home.
The police’s Captain Mavela Masondo has confirmed that the man was arrested following the shooting.
Masondo said the suspect claimed that he thought an intruder had broken into their home which prompted him to reach for his licensed firearm.
The husband then fired two shots before finding out he had shot his wife.
Masango’s murder has prompted social media users to express their sadness, anger and grief under the hashtag #JusticeForHlengiwe.
