In a media briefing, the province disclosed that they can officially relax lockdown because they have been able to contain the pandemic to a reasonable extent.
Professor Bruce Mellado from Wits University said Gauteng can gradually relax lockdown since the province was able to successfully control the first COVID-19 surge.
The Gauteng Provincial Command Council briefed the media on the province’s response to COVID-19.
“The province given the success of controlling the first surge and the hotspots, we are in the position to relax the lockdown,” Mellado said.
“Clearly there are different scenarios, the relaxation of the lockdown is a complex matter and from the mathematical standpoint and also based on experience from other countries, it is very clear whatever happens, and whatever configuration of that relaxation takes place, maybe performed gradually and phased away, overconfidence, unfortunately, doesn’t pay off.”
The province may be seeing a decline in COVID-19 infections.
However, Gauteng Premier David Makhura says there’s still a long way ahead.
They warned that the worst is not over yet and they all need to take safety precautions more seriously.
