COVID-19 infections in SA mount up to 579,140

The Health Department has released the latest update on COVID-19 numbers.

In the last 24 hours, 286 COVID-19 related deaths were reported, which brings the countrywide death toll to 11,556.


Gauteng had the highest number of deaths, with 76 reported.

In KwaZulu-Natal, 54 people died, 42 from the Eastern Cape, 28 from the Western Cape, 26 from the North West, 22 in Mpumalanga, 20 from the Free State, and 18 from the Northern Cape.

The department confirmed 6,275 new cases, which brings the total number of infections to 579,140.

Gauteng is fast approaching the 200,000 case mark.

The recovery rate is now at 79% with the total number of tests conducted to date at 3,351,111.

More than 461,000 patients have recovered from the virus.
