South Africans are encouraged by the Tourism Minister to start travelling and visiting places in the country.

Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane said this at a virtual media briefing which highlighted tourism-related activities in the level 2 risk-adjusted strategy lockdown.

The tourism minister said if South Africans start travelling around the country, it would go a long way in supporting the tourism sector which faced a hard time ever since the start of lockdown.

“We are putting together the pieces of a new path towards recovery as many people in our sector return to work to provide for their families following months of hardship,” she said.

“We’re talking about marketing the country and having people like yourselves travelling, spending your money in the tourism sector so that tourism businesses can regain their status and become viable again,” she added.

She said accommodation venues are allowed to operate as long as they comply with the outlined regulations.

She also said that as soon as Covid-19 risks are lower, International flights will be allowed which will bring foreigners to the country and also benefit the tourism industry.

According to her, when the tourism sector runs smoothly, other sectors would definitely benefit from it.

“We are mindful that this is critical as tourism is one of the pillars for the broader South African economic recovery and growth.”
