Hawks together with members of the police have raided the Mfanasekhaya Gqobose building  in Govan Mbeki Avenue on Friday morning.

This sudden search by the enforcement officials shocked the Nelson Mandela Bay municipal workers.

The raid followed the arrest of the acting municipal manager, Mvuleni Mapu.

About 10 law enforcement members raided the building and spent close to 40 minutes at the budget and treasury building’s first floor.

They moved up to the ninth floor which was used for filing infrastructure and engineering documents.

The municipal workers were later barred an hour later from leaving the upper levels of the building while the law officials continued with their search and seizure operation.

According to Hawks spokesperson, Lwando Zenzile, the municipal official who was arrested alongside a female business woman early this morning is currently in a cell at the Port Elizabeth magistrate’s court.

The accused representative is attorney Danie Gouws while the prosecutor is advocate Clint Jacobs from the commercial crimes branch.

They are to appear in court on Friday
