Modified snorkeling masks used in Tygerberg for adequate safety from COVID-19

These modified masks are made for snorkeling in tropical waters, however, in this modification, the snorkel and an adapter was not included. A breathing filter was added instead.


Following the onset of COVID-19 pandemic in the country, it has made a lot of individuals, companies, industries and organisations to be creative and innovative.

For example, the healthcare workers at Tygerberg became innovative with snorkeling masks.

The healthcare workers made use of the modified masks for their safety against of COVID-19.

Dr Lizelle van Wyk (the hospital’s neonatologists), an enthusiastic diver was shown the snorkeling mask by a diving colleague.

We were able to import these masks from Europe where they have been using them since the start of the COVID-19 and I can now say that we have over 300 of these masks for use by health professionals inside Tygerberg Hospital, which will prevent the healthcare workers spread of COVID-19.”
