The police have arrested a 42-year-old man after he stabbed a 44-year-old Rhandzeka Papani Ngoveni.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said that on Saturday night, the victim had a heated argument with the suspect at a local tavern in Mushiyani village in the Giyani policing area.
“The deceased was reportedly followed by the suspect when he left the tavern. He was stabbed to death.”
Mojapelo added that “this is one of the liquor-related incidents that took place since the easing of lockdown regulations to Level 2″.
Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba commended the police for arresting the suspect.
However, the Government has expressed its worries on the adverse effects of alcohol abuse relating to murder and fatal road accident which had been recurrent since the phasing in of level 2 lockdown which allowed the consumption of alcohol.
In Gauteng, over 820 people were arrested over the weekend, for various crimes but the predominant one was drunk and reckless driving.
Mpumalanga also recorded 48 crashes over the weekend, which killed nine, left 54 seriously injured and 46 slightly injured.
Government spokesperson Phumla Williams in a statement said that it is noticed tha some people were flouting Level 2 regulations.
She called on the law enforcement authorities to makes sure the culprits are punished.
She also agreed with the Police Minister, Bheki Cele who encouraged the police to be extra tough on people that take alcohol and drive.
She called on all to be watchful and careful.
“We urge road users, especially drivers, to take extra care and exercise utmost vigilance on the road.”
