Eastern Cape off duty police officer shot dead in his car

The body of a police officer was found with gunshot wounds in his car in Bethelsdorp, Port Elizabeth.

The off-duty police officer was shot and killed in his car on Saturday night.


Police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana siad police officers responded to a report of shooting in Wallflower Street in Extension 33 around 11.15pm.

The police officer was found dead alone in his car.

“On arrival, the body of Sergeant De Porres Leanard Frieslaar, 37, was found inside his Suzuki Celerio with a bullet wound to his head.”

The circumstances surrounding the shooting is not yet known.

Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said Hawks have started investigating the murder case.

Eastern Cape police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga who was saddened by the news of the murder condemned the killing.

She forwarded her condolences to Frieslaar’s family members, friends and colleagues.

The police have called on the public with any information on the whereabouts of the shooters to report to the police on the My SAPS app or to contact the police’s Crime Stop number 08600 10111.

Police assured that information received will be treated as confidential.
