SANBS put blood plasma test as potential COVID-19 treatment

The South African National Blood Service wants to put to test blood plasma gotten from patients who recovered from COVID-19 as a treatment for the infected COVID-19 patients.


In order to test the effectiveness and safety of the collected blood plasma, the organisation will begin phase two clinical trials.

Marion Vermeulen, Biomedical scientist said it will hand over the plasma to physicians for clinical trials.

We collect the plasma and give it to patients ill with the virus. The hope is that the antibodies will fight the virus will the patient’s bodies are still trying to develop their own antibodies,” she said.

This hope is that patient will become better sooner.”
