A policeman and a policewoman who allegedly shot Nathaniel Julius dead in Eldorado Park appeared at the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Scorpion Simon Ndyalvane and Caylene Whiteboy who were attached to the Eldorado Park crime prevention unit appeared briefly in the Protea magistrate’s court in Soweto on Monday afternoon.
The duo were arrested by the members of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) on Friday.
The police officers were charged with premeditated murder, defeating the ends of justice, discharging a firearm in a public space and unlawful possession of ammunition.
The National Prosecuting Authority made it known that the officers will remain in police custody until September 10 for further investigation and to allow the second accused gets a legal representative.
The courtroom was filled with police officers, some community members dressed in #JusticeForNateniël T-shirts.
Before the court proceedings, EFF supporters were restricted from entering the courtroom.
They struggled with the policemen who guarded the court’s door.
“Shoot me. Who are you? Shoot me,” the angry supporters were heard shouting at the police.
16 year-old Nathaniel Julius who had down syndrome was allegedly killed by the police on Wednesday.
His death sparked protest in the Eldorado Park community against the police.
