A security guard and a 34-year-old sergeant stationed at the Tshilwavhusikhu police station in Limpopo have been arrested in connection to an armed robbery at a filling station.
The filling station in Modambidzha was attacked on August 13.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, said “the sergeant, who is also a detective, was arrested on Sunday morning, together with a security officer for armed robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery”.
Mojapelo explained that the sergeant was arrested after the police carried out thorough investigations on this matter.
Mojapelo also narrated that during the course of the robbery, the sergeant allegedly aggressively approached one of the three security guards who were delivering cash at the filling station.
The sergeant who was “armed with a firearm” allegedly disarmed the security guard of his service pistol.
“Another group of about eight suspects emerged and started shooting at the cash van.”
“The suspects thereafter fled in a silver Toyota Hilux. A security guard aged 37, was later arrested in connection with the incident,” Mojapelo said.
He added that the police sergeant is among the 1 554 suspects arrested in the province for various crimes committed in the past week.
Mojapelo said during the several operations carried out, firearms, vehicles were recovered while dagga, liquor and illicit cigarettes were seized.
