Three teachers including principal arrested for assaulting pupils

Three high school teachers arrested for allegedly assaulting four pupils have been arraigned to appear before the court on Wednesday.

These teachers were arrested by the Mpumalanga police on Tuesday following the alleged assaults which happened on Monday.


The trio are due to appear in Ermelo magistrate’s court today.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said the four pupils aged between 17 and 21 were allegedly assaulted in their school in Breyton.

He said “according to information, the teachers instituted corporal punishment on the pupils, who sustained injuries.”

“One of the pupils reported the matter to her parents who then alerted police.”

“A case was registered and three other pupils came forward with further allegations of assault against the three teachers.”

“Police conducted an investigation and discovered that among those implicated is the principal of the school and a head of department.”

The teachers face charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and an additional charge of common assault.
