After Sundowns’ title triumph, Maboe dedicated their third Absa Premiership title in a row to the Sundowns fans, with all supporters not given access into stadiums since the onset of COVID-19
Mamelodi Sundowns forward – Lebo Maboe made emphasis on how his side have had to cope since the resumption of local football and also how they won the trophy from Kaizer Chiefs who were on level points with them.
Sundowns lifted the Absa Premiership trophy for the third season in a row after their match on the last day of the 2019/20 season .
On Saturday, Sundowns played Black Leopards at Dobsonville Stadium knowing fully well they had only one thing to do – to win their match against Black Leopards and hope Chiefs are denied goals against Baroka FC at Bidvest Stadium.
Their hopes worked out after Chiefs had a 1-1 draw with Baroka while Sundowns won Leopard with a 3-0 win. Their win made it their fifth league title in seven seasons under Pitso Mosimane.
In a conversation with SuperSport TV after the game, Maboe who won the Man-of-the-Match made his comment on how Sundowns struggled with the difficulty of the doubts that surrounded their title challenge.
“You have to be mentally tough,” he said.
“After spending so much time in camp (in the bio-bubble), even after every draw and defeat it is not like you could go back to your family. You have to stay as one and we are a big team, but we had to make our supporters happy.”
“I would like to say here is La Decima (Sundowns’ 10th Premiership title), thanks for their support throughout the season, the trophy is for them.”
Maboe scored a goal in the first half and added two more goals to hand over the Absa Premiership trophy to Mamelodi Sundowns. This tallied to their fourth win in five games and leave Leopards dumped into the relegation play-offs which will begin tomorrow.
