Capitec warns customers of new scam technique

Seems a new fraudster is in town.

Capitec Bank took to its twitter page warning its customers of a new con by fraudsters.

Capitec advised its elderly clients to be careful of people calling them claiming that they are from the bank’s anti-fraud division.

The fraudsters would tell them that an unknown person attempted to defraud their account or that a stop order was loaded without their consent on their account.

They would request the customer to approve the confirmation messages sent to their banking app using their PIN in order to block the alleged fraudulent activity.

These criminals will then proceed to leading clients through the process of performing a transaction through the app.

In this process, the account holder will unknowingly transfer funds to the fraudster.

Capitec warned account holders to be careful of this scam because the bank will never ask people for their personal details over the phone.
