Gauteng premier David Makhura has fired embattled Gauteng health MEC Dr Bandile Masuku.

Masuku had been placed on special leave since July 30.

While addressing the media on Friday, Makhura made it known that the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) revealed that Dr Masuku had “failed to execute his functions in compliance with the constitution and the Public Finance Management Act”.

SIU recommended that Makhura takes administrative action against Masuku.

“I want those facts because it is a matter of grave concern relating to clean governance.

“Based on their findings where they say the MEC failed to execute his functions, I have decided to discharge Dr Bandile Masuku from his responsibilities at the MEC of health,” Makhura explains.

Makhura made it known that the PPE corruption investigation will still continue despite discharging Masuku.

He however noted that the Gauteng health MEC position will remain vacant until the investigation concludes.

MEC Jacob Mamabolo will continue to act as Gauteng health MEC.

“I want to get this completed before I appoint the MEC for health in Gauteng. Should MEC Masuku be cleared, I will gladly reappoint him as the MEC for health,” Makhura points out.

The premier said that there must be a punishment for corrupt practices.

“I keenly await the final determination of the SIU pertaining to allegations of corruption and collusion. I am acting on the part that says he failed. I am acting on that part already,” he explains.
