Ipid initiates investigation after KZN man dies in custody

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has initiated an investigation after the death of a KZN man, when police officers allegedly assaulted him due to accusation of having a firearm.


It was reported that officers were following up on an intel that the man had an unlicensed firearm in his possession.

Ipid spokesperson, Ndileka Cola said last week Wednesday, officers went to the man’s girlfriend’s house in the Ulundi area in northern KwaZulu-Natal, where they requested to know the whereabout of the firearm.

Cola said the man disputed having a gun in his possession but officers locked the man inside a room, according to reports.

It is alleged that the man was heard crying in agony and after a short while, police left with him. He was handcuffed. They officers did not explain where they were going or why they were taking the man. They just left,” Cola said.

She said the deceased returned after a short while, but was weak and started vomiting blood.

The people in the house realised the deteriorating condition of the man’s health and rushed him to a local clinic for immediate medical attention.

The man was transferred to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” Cola said.

She said on Tuesday, an investigating team from Ipid will attend a post-mortem session in KwaNongoma.

The team will then gather all necessary information and evidence as part of the investigation process that will inform any action and recommendations by by the directorate.”
