Following the downpour of heavy rains this year, several dams have exceeded their capacity

This year, the Western Cape’s water supply has experienced a distinct recovery this year with several dams exceeding their capacity, after heavy winter rains.

The National Department of Water and Sanitation has halted water restrictions in several parts of the province, but on Tuesday, the City of Cape Town said it would remain patient till November to make its decision on reducing water restrictions in the metro and any reduction of tariffs.

Department Spokesperson Sputnik Ratau said:

We are able to either impose or lift restrictions as per the gazetted restrictions by the department, which are restrictions on the system itself; whereas the local restrictions are the responsibility of local government – that’s why the City of Cape Town is able to take special decisions regarding that.”
