During the presentation of the government’s economy recovery plan to revive the economy from the effects of the pandemic, President Cyril Ramaphosa disclosed that government had allocated R100 billion to stimulate jobs.
Statistics South Africa revealed that about 2.2 million South Africans were left with no jobs in the second quarter after so many companies had to shut their doors due to the lockdown.
Ramaphosa made it known that there will be immediate benefits for job creation:
“With over 800,000 employment opportunities created in the months ahead.”
He added that the basic income grant has been extended for those struggling financially.
“We will therefore be extending the Special Covid-19 grant by a further three months so that we assist our people who are in distress.”
He however noted that jobs would be boosted including labour sector jobs:
“More than 60,000 jobs will be created for labour-intensive maintenance and construction of municipal infrastructure and rural roads.”
The president noted that combined with the plan to increase infrastructure spending, employment will be provided for construction workers alongside nurses to boost the health sector.
