Four suspects arrested in connection to a R1.4 billion Gauteng Department of Health tender are expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The four are facing charges of corruption.

It dates back to 2007 when the department had no money for the contract but still approved.

However services were not delivered and two companies namely Baoki Consortium and 3P walked away with R1.1 billion and R300 million, respectively.

The tender for health information and electronic systems was awarded during the time of MEC Brian Hlongwa.

Baoki Consortium director Heinz Smidek later bought a house worth R4.6 million in Bryanston that Hlongwa lived in rent-free.

After many years, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) reported that Hlongwa received kickbacks, luxury trips, and other benefits.

The report also recommended that him and 11 other people and companies should face criminal charges.
