It’s your first date, you’re wearing your favorite dress, your hands are shaking a little bit under the table, and right across from you sits the most gorgeous guy you have ever seen in your whole life.
You’ve been crushing on him for so long that when he asked you out, you almost fainted!
You already said your orders to the waiter and the moment you’ve been dreading approaches. It’s now time for the “talk.” What do you say? How do you start? What are the best things to talk about on a first date?
These questions are swimming in your head! But remember this is what we’re trying to avoid, so feel free to try out these six conversation starters:
1. Talk about the movie you just saw
If by some lucky chance he took you out to see a movie first before having dinner, then this is perfect! Seeing a film before the actual dinner date is highly recommended because then you will have something to talk about rather than playing with your food.
Don’t waste time waiting who will start the conversation first. Ask him what he liked about the movie or share what was your favorite part. Once you get the conversation starting, it will be difficult to stop.
2. Throw in a generic yet interesting question
You will probably ask yourself, what’s a generic yet interesting question? It’s the first date so you can’t escape the questions you usually ask. You can ask questions like if where does he go to university or what his job is but give it a little twist.
When we say twist, we mean rephrase it or give its introduction a bit of jazz. Don’t just flat out ask him, set the mood and then casually stir your drink and ask, “What do you do that keeps you going in life?”
3. Figure what their hobbies are
Again, never flatly ask them what their interests or hobbies are. You are not trying to bore your date to death, but rather you are trying to get them talking so you can identify a point of interest and lead your conversation towards that.
If you’re a naturally shy person, then you must shed away that shyness for even a little while, so you can grab that opportunity in front of you. Try to figure out what kind of person your date is and see where it goes from there.
4. Talk about the food you’re eating
This is a no-brainer. What else to talk about than the food that you’re having right now? Again, don’t just play with your fork and casually ask him if he likes the food. Flip your hair to one shoulder, be confident, and share with him why you ordered this dish in the first place.
You want to make a first good impression so show him that you have depth. You’re more than meets the eye. Just like the food you’re eating, you’re not just pretty to look at but you’re pleasing to the palette too, in a sense!
5. Ask them what’s the funniest thing they’ve ever done
Once you get the conversation going, it’s time to keep it afloat. If you feel like the talking is going to be a dead stop once he finishes his sentence, then ask another question such as the title for this option.
Asking him the funniest thing he has ever done will not only bring happy memories to him, but it will also help you get to know him further. It’s also another chance for you to pick another topic to expand the conversation further such as, “Oh, you dived into the local lake? I’ve been there with my family last summer…”
6. Give her a compliment
If you happen to find yourself seated across a lovely lady/dude, then please don’t hesitate to give them a compliment. They will probably blush but will love it. Don’t just tell them they look good, but rather remind them of her exquisite features and what makes them unique.
But you need to have your limits too, don’t overdo with the compliments because they will think it’s insincere or you only like them for their looks. Don’t make inappropriate comments as well even if you are tempted to do so.
