Some foods have been found to be as useful as over-the-counter medications in treating conditions such skin infections. Infection is the invasion of the body by harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.


Some foods have anti-microbial properties that can help prevent or fight infection. Below, we’ve listed 5 different foods that can help fight or prevent skin infections.

While the benefits of most of these foods are achieved by ingesting them, some have been found to be useful when applied topically.

1. Cabbage

Cabbage: This green vegetable is high in vitamin C that helps our bodies fight off foreign invaders. For years, the leaves of cabbages have been used as poultices to heal cuts, scratches, grazes, abscesses and infected wounds. For example, you can use cabbage leaves to remove pus from ingrown toenails and eliminate the infection.

2. Coconut oil benefits

Coconut oil: It’s an effective home remedy for ringworm and other fungal infection caused by a yeast called Candida. The high levels of lauric acid and caprylic acid in coconut oil can protect the skin from harmful microorganisms as well as boost immunity, when consumed.

3. Garlic milk

Garlic: Fresh garlic contains an amino acid called alliin that has antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antiseptic properties. Allicin can fight the bacteria that causes acne and reduce swelling and inflammation. Eating fresh garlic can also help get rid of yeast, fungus, and worms from the digestive tract. Garlic is also a safe topical medicine for skin infections, such as fungal infections, warts and corns.

4. Honey

Honey: Studies have shown the antibacterial effect of honey on bacteria commonly present in wounds, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE). It can be applied topically to cuts and abscesses. You can also mix it with garlic and ginger to disinfect wounds.

5. Turmeric

Turmeric: This common kitchen ingredient is an excellent natural remedy for a variety of skin conditions, including pimples, breakouts, eczema and atopic dermatitis – thanks to its incredible anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Turmeric can also be eaten or applied topically to disinfect cuts and burns.
