We all can make the Braai Pie in different ways with different methods. So here are several recipes to choose from.
You can decide to stick to the traditional method, but there is no harm in trying out something new and different.
Over the years, people continue to come with braai ideas to make the most savory meals. The internet has enabled more and more people to share their braai pie recipe with the entire world.
Here are some of the braais you should try.
1. Suzelle DIY braai pie:
Ingredients:
- Two rolls of puff pastry
- Sautéed sliced mushrooms
- Filling cheese
- Cooked onion
- Parsley
- Pepper seasoning
- One whisked egg
Method:
- Lay your first roll of the pastry on the grid
- Sprinkle a little bit of cheese and spread evenly.
- Top it with the onion and add the mushroom.
- Add the already cooked meat and distribute it evenly.
- Season the filling, then cover with the other roll of pastry, ensure you seal the edges properly.
- Brush the top with the egg and then close the grid and place it on the braai.
- Ensure that you turn the grid regularly so that it cooks thoroughly on both sides and give it 15 minutes.
2. A spinach and cheese braai pie:
Ingredients:
- Baby spinach two handfuls
- 100 grams of grated mozzarella cheese
- Two rolls of puff pastry
- One sliced onion
- 50-gram packet of white onion soup powder
- 60 ml of grated parmesan cheese
- Two rounds of crumbled feta cheese
- One whisked egg
Method:
- Apply non-stick spray on a clean grid then spread one roll of the pastry carefully.
- Add spinach and onion toppings evenly and sprinkle the onion soup powder on top and pepper.
- Sprinkle the parmesan, mozzarella, and feta cheese on top.
- Place the other roll of the pastry on top of the filling and seal the edges carefully; you can use a fork to do this.
- Brush the whisked egg on top pastry for both sides and close the grid.
- Place the grid on the braai.
- Make sure to turn regularly to ensure both sides are nicely done for about 20-30 minutes.
3. Veggie nice braai pie
Ingredients:
- Two rolls of puff pastry
- A box of meat-free mince with vegan gravy 1 sliced punnet button mushrooms
- Olive oil
- Chutney Salt and pepper
- One sliced white onion
- One crushed garlic clove
- A handful of fresh thyme
- A small tin of tomato paste
- Vegan mayo
- Half a cucumber
- Fresh lettuce
- Carrot slivers
- Baby tomatoes
- Garnishing micro herbs
- One red pepper
Method:
- Add olive oil into a pan and heat it, then add the onions and stir until they are soft.
- Add fresh thyme then sprinkle with salt and pepper, and once the onions are golden brown, remove from the heat and place in a bowl.
- Add little oil to the pan and fry the garlic and mushrooms until the mushrooms start softening then set them aside.
- In a different pan, prepare the vegan gravy according to the instructions given on the pack, then add tomato paste to the gravy. Let it cook for 5 minutes, then set it aside; remember the mince should not be too wet.
- Spray the grid with baking spray on both sides.
- Place a roll of the puff pastry on the grid.
- Add the mince onto the pastry and evenly distribute it on the pastry leaving 2cm border along the edges.
- Top the mince with a layer of onions and mushrooms. Cut a few thyme leaves and top them over, then sprinkle salt and pepper.
- Place the second sheet of pastry onto the fillings and carefully seal the edges.
- Brush the olive oil on both sides and close the grid.
- Braai the pie for 15 minutes and regularly turn the pie until both sides are thoroughly cooked or crisp.
- When done, garnish the pie with fresh micro herbs.
- You can serve the dish with a chutney and mayo dipping sauce.
4. Mushroom and steak braai pie
Ingredients:
- Two rolls of puff pastry
- 400 grams of sliced steak (cooked)
- 600 grams of sliced brown mushrooms
- 100 ml of onion marmalade
- 30 grams of butter
- Melted butter Salt and pepper
- Freshly chopped parsley
Method:
- Put some butter in a frying pan and fry the mushrooms with parsley, then add a pinch of pepper and salt. Stir until all the liquid given off is evaporated then set it aside to cool.
- Place one roll of the puff pastry on a braai grid make sure to leave a 2cm border around the edges of the pastry.
- Place the onion marmalade over the pastry and spread it properly.
- Add the steak and mushrooms, sprinkle a pinch of pepper and salt then lay the other roll of pastry on top.
- Seal the two sheets of pastry to avoid any of the toppings from spilling over.
- Brush the pastry with the melted butter, close the grid and place it on the braai.
- Make sure to turn the grid every 3 minutes to ensure both sides are well cooked.
- Do this for 20 minutes; however, make sure before you remove the grid from the braai that the pie is properly cooked.
