“My academic journey began in 1996 when I did my grade 1. Never had I imagined one day that I will reach this level. Being from the dusty streets of Washbank, a village in the small town of Umzimkhulu, it’s truly humbling that one has come this far.”

Yanga said he was hospitalized in December 2016 and he spent about two months.

He mentioned that his experience in the hospital taught him to trust in God and appreciate people arounmd him.

“In December 2016 I was hospitalized for close to two months and that experience taught me to trust in God and appreciate those around me. My life would have ended right there but God said no, I have greater plans for you.”

Well, he is grateful to have graduated from Wits University for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in African Languages and Linguistics.

Yanga went on to appreciate everyone who was there for him during his struggling times.

“Yesterday I graduated from Wits University for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in African Languages and Linguistics with specific focus on the classification, development and recognition of isiBhaca spoken in parts of Umzimkhulu and am truly humbled.

“I appreciate God almighty, my wife, family and mother in particular, friends, my church and colleagues who provided all kinds of support. A PhD journey needs academic, emotional, moral and spiritual support, without which one may find it difficult to cope.”
