How to prevent your phone from running your relationship

Nothing kills communication between couples these days faster than pulling out their smartphone.

Although technology has helped us in many significant ways, it is fast becoming a harbinger of doom for many relationships.

A lot of breakups in recent times are caused either directly or indirectly because of what one partner does with their phone.

Probably your relationship has been suffering from the all too familiar symptoms; bae complains that you give more attention to what happen on your phone than you give to him.

Before things get out of hand, now is the time to make adjustments where necessary.

To help you take the first step towards saving your relationship from technological ruin, use these 4 simple tips.

1. Set boundaries

The mistake most couples make is failure to set boundaries for the use of their phones and other devices. Ensure that you state clearly when you can use phones while in each other’s company so that you both don’t end up feeling neglected by the other.

2. Keep track of the time you spend online when  your partner is around

It’s so easy to get lost online by linking one domain via another till the time is gone. Keeping track of how much time you spend at a go while with your partner will keep you free for communication when they need you. Saying ‘I’m listening’ while scrolling through your phone is never a good way to show that you are actually listening.

3. Share your ‘phone-time’ with your partner

As damaging as using your device can be to your relationship, when used well, it can also foster better communication between you and your partner. A good way to do this is by sharing whatever you are doing on your phone with your partner. For instance, showing them a cute or funny picture you found online can open a channel of communication for both of you.

4. Know when enough is enough

Couples have the tendency to overlook complaints from their partner when it comes to how much time they spend on the phone. In order to avoid arguments that may escalate to bigger issues, take your partner seriously once they complain about it. People usually mean it when they say they feel neglected, so take note of that.
