Hydration is of utmost importance for the smooth functioning of all bodily systems. Just like any other nutrient, water is crucial for survival.

While one common suggestion we keep getting is to have at least 8-10 glasses of water every day. But just having enough water is not it.

We all make some common mistakes while consuming water that can put us in trouble. Here are five such mistakes that we need to avoid.

1. Drinking water while standing

How many of you drink water while standing? Well, most of us do that many times. Our elders always reminded us to have water in a sitting position.

Drinking water while standing can get the nerves tensed, disturb the fluid balance and cause indigestion. Ayurveda also recommends not to have water while standing. As per Ayurveda, when you consume water while standing, it goes to the lower part of the stomach and does not provide you with nutrients.

2. Gulping too quickly

There are many times when we are in a hurry or too thirsty and thus gulp down the water quickly. This can lead to impurities in the kidney and bladder accumulating below. Have small sips of water to aid digestion.

3. You are drinking more than you need

Yes, there is such a thing as too much, even when it comes to having water. And there is no proof that drinking extra water has any health benefits.

Too much water can lead to hyponatremia also called water intoxication, increasing the sodium levels too low, resulting in the swelling of the brain, seizures and coma.

4. Do not drink water just before meal

Many weight-loss diets suggest having water right before a meal so that you eat fewer calories. But this is not the right thing to do as per Ayurveda.

Ayurveda says that one’s stomach should be filled with 50 per cent of food, 25 per cent of water and 25 per cent should be left empty for the digestive process. Drinking water right before a meal can deprive you of nutrients and disrupt digestion. It can also cause nausea and constipation.

5. Adding sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners can increase the risk of weight gain. These might taste refreshing but can actually dehydrate your body. Having simple plain water is the best way to keep yourself hydrated.
