4 mistakes we all make when using our smartphones

You may be keeping it close for an alarm or even to observe the quality of your sleep for health purposes. However, your cell phone is not a good sleep companion!


In addition to bedtime, your phone is harming you during the day in more ways than you realize.

However, here are 4 mistakes we all make when using our smartphones.

1. Sleeping with it

Sleeping with your smartphones can seriously mess up your sleep! Smartphones emit high levels of radiation which can cause disfunction or unbalance to your biological clock. Sleeping next to your phone can also contribute to restlessness and frequently waking up throughout the night.

2. Being exposed to blue light for too long

Continued exposure to blue light over time could damage retinal cells and cause vision problems such as age-related macular degeneration. It can also contribute to cataracts, eye cancer, blurry vision, eyestrain, dry eye and growths on the clear covering over the white part of the eye.

3. Keeping it in contact with your skin

Don’t keep your cell phones too close to your face. When you do that, bacteria present on the screen and buttons of the device they are transferred to your skin and electromagnetic radiation gets closer. To talk on the phone, it is recommended to leave the device with a distance of 0.5 to 1.5 cm from the skin.

When a phone or other device is held close to one’s face, it forces the eye to work harder than usual to focus on text. The discomfort can eventually result in fatigue.

4. Looking at the screen with bad posture

By bending your neck forward to view the screen of your phone, you place strain on your cervical spine, which can degrade over time. Prolonged device usage can cause faulty posture such as forward neck posture or rounded shoulders.

The frequency of device use, the degree of neck flexion while using the phone, and the body position are some of the main factors associated with neck and shoulder pain and its severity.
