An irritating dry cough is common after getting over a cold or the flu, and it can last for weeks.

It can leave your throat raw while your body tries to expel contaminants in your lungs and may be so frequent that it interrupts your speech and keeps you from sleeping through the night.

You should always see your doctor for an official diagnosis. In the meantime, here are some at-home remedies to help with your cough.

How to get over a dry cough

1. Honey

Honey has natural antibacterial properties and will coat your throat. This stops much of the irritation that’s causing you to constantly cough. Adults and children 1 and older can do this several times each day, either by eating a spoonful of honey or mixing it with tea or milk. While rare, honey can have adverse effects in infants, so speak to their doctor about alternatives.

2. Steam

You can overcome the dry, raw sensation in your throat by inhaling steam. Step into a hot shower and plug a towel beneath the door to trap steam inside. You can also boil water on the stove and breathe the steam coming out. Just don’t place your face directly over the boiling water, as you may burn yourself.

3. Ginger

Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, so it can alleviate much of the discomfort that causes and comes from a dry cough. It’s also a natural immune system booster and can help you get over the lingering effects of a cold or the flu.

There are many ways to use ginger root. Try nibbling on it raw or boiling it in hot water to create a soothing tea. You can also dice it up and add it to a salad or a meal. You may be able to take a ginger root supplement, if approved by your doctor.
