In a short period of three months, the Omicron variant has become the dominating strain of coronavirus across the globe.

The new variant is responsible for most of the COVID infection cases, and has been a reason of panic.

The only sign of relief is that Omicron infection does not lead to severe symptoms like Delta and other previous variants, so the risk of hospitalisation and death is low.

The symptoms of Omicron is similar to that of the common cold and mostly leads to runny nose, sore throat, body ache, chest pain, fatigue and headache.

Even though, Omicron infection is mild identifying it through its symptoms is predominant in order to take the treatment at the right time and cut down the risk of infection.

Here we will tell you how to detect from the episodes of headaches if you have been infected with Omicron variant.

How common is a headache in case of Omicron infection

As per a UK based app study headache is among the top five symptoms of Omicron. There can be headache due to many reasons on a daily basis, but the one caused by the Omicron variant feels different from others. Persistent headache is an early sign of Omicron variant and is often accompanied by other symptoms like runny nose, sore throat and fatigue. Here are three ways to distinguish between headaches caused by Omicron infection and others.

1. It is moderate to severely painful

The intensity of your headache depends on the triggers. It can be mild if caused by work pressure and can be severe if it is caused due to migraine. In the case of Omicron infection, the headache is mostly moderate to severe. It feels like pulsing, pressing, or stabbing, which is uncommon in the case of a general headache. Apart from that, headaches caused due to the Omicron variant also lasts for three days, even if you take painkillers regularly.

2. It occurs across both sides of the head

If you have ever paid attention, sometimes our head aches only on one side- right or left or on a part like the middle region. The region of the pain in a headache depends on triggers and the reason for your headache. But when it comes to Omicron infection, the pain can be felt on both sides of the head. Your entire head may feel tense and painful.

3. It may be accompanied by inflammation

As per experts, headaches in the case of Omicron can be the body’s inflammatory reaction as it fights off the virus. As the virus multiplies in the respiratory system, it also affects the sinus, leading to inflammation. The same is in the case of the Omicron variant. So, the headache commonly occurs with inflammation of the sinuses. If you are suffering from the problem of sinus infection then your headache can be worse.
