5 signs to identify a toxic workplace on your first day

Working in a stressful environment is something no employee ever wishes for.

A workplace should be motivating, encouraging and calm enough for employees to work without feeling constant pressure to perform effectively.

While the latter is an integral part of any workplace, working under criticism, extreme pressure is never advisable.

And so, you should always look out for signs that suggest your workplace is very toxic so that you can take the necessary steps to battle it.

Here are some signs that you can spot on your very first day at your new workplace.

1. You aren’t included in anything

On your first day, your new colleagues and manager should make the effort to make you feel welcome and included in new work activities. You shouldn’t feel alone on the first day and if your workplace doesn’t seem to care about their new employee on their very first day, then there’s an issue in your workplace.

2. There’s a lot of rude behaviour

If you notice that there’s a lot of belittling and rude behaviour circulating among colleagues via emails, chats and even when speaking, then it’s a sign that your boss doesn’t do anything to stop such behaviour in the workplace.

3. Gossips circulate a lot

When gossips circulate around in your workplace, it is not a good sign. People shouldn’t dwell in others’ private businesses in the workplace. Many may not be comfortable with such behaviour. Allowing gossip and rumours to fly around is certainly not a good thing.

4. The job is different

A workplace may also be toxic when the job you have applied for looks completely different after the onboarding process. If you are given different duties, completely different from those expected, then it’s a sign that your workplace is not organised. Look out for any other changes related to work hours, salary, the flexibility of work etc.

5. Dreading about the next day

If you are finishing your work on the first day, dreading what will happen next, then this job is certainly not calm or relaxing. If your gut is telling you that this job seems to have such toxic traits, then it’s advisable to be upfront with your work expectations and needs from the very first day.
