Thuso Mbedu wins at the Film Independent Spirit Awards 2022

Thuso Mbedu wins the Best Female Performance in a new scripted Series at the Independent Spirit Awards 2022 on Sunday night for her role in The Underground Railroad series.


This is the first time she got nominated and also her first win, hence the excitement.

The South African actress is excited and feels honoured as she beat those who were in the same category with her, and they are Anjana Vasan (We Are Woman Components), Jana Schmieding (Rutherford Falls), Jasmine Cephas Jones (Blindspotting) and Deborah Ayorinde (THEM: Covenant).

Taking to social media, the star wrote, “A big thank you to @filmindependent for allowing me to be part of such an important and brilliant group of people. I’m humbled. Thank you for this recognition.”

“Thank you to Colson Whitehead, Barry Jenkins and Amazon Studios for gifting us with #TheUndergroundRailroad. Thank you to everyone involved in creating this timeless work of art. I have a lot more people to thank – and I will – but right now I just need to let this sink in.”

Upon receiving the award at the event, Thuso expressed her excitement and gratitude.

“In the beginning, thanks to Movie Unbiased for this recognition.” After thanking creator and director Barry Jenkins for “completely every thing,” Mbedu confirmed her appreciation for casting director Francine Maisler’s “steering.” Story continues “Thanks to Amazon, to all the chief producers, to my workforce, Beth, April, Laurie, everybody,” she continued. The actress then thanked her sister in South Africa, joking that “she would kill me if I don’t say something about her.” She confirmed her appreciation for “each single one that was concerned in The Underground Railroad.” Mbedu mentioned, “There was no one that was too small in making the challenge what it was, and I actually, actually hope that you simply guys will take the time to look at it as a result of it’s an absolute masterpiece.” The actress continued to rave about Jenkins backstage.

“Barry is a really collaborative director and it was extra about what I discovered for the character greater than something and him supporting that,” she instructed reporters. “It was evident with like moments on set, the place if we made a proposal, he would then go and alter the script to accommodate that which we had supplied, which was superb.” Mbedu mentioned it was a “nice problem to inform the story as a result of it’s a essential story,” including that she “needed it to go to whoever may inform it as authentically and as respectfully as attainable.” “I’m grateful that I did get that chance, too, and I did quite a lot of analysis going into it guided by Barry, and I do hope that individuals will get the prospect to obtain it for what it’s, with out me really feel like I imposed my feelings onto it anyway,” she added.
