Working in an office environment can be more peaceful if you do small things that matter much.

To help you navigate the toughest of environments, here are 6 unexpected ways of being the colleague people love.

1. Cheerful greetings

It is not something to be taken lightly because a genuine smile right when you meet someone cheers up the saddest of hearts. You must always greet your co-workers in the morning and while leaving for home. People notice you when you do that and they will remember you by default.

2. Find common interest

To hold a conversation , whether while taking coffee from the machine or going for a light breakfast outside the office building or amid those short breaks between meetings, you must find common interest between you and your colleague. Always ask the question- “when did you first start doing xyz?”

3. Don’t get drawn into controversial discussions

If you get into political discussions or anything that is controversial and can turn into heated arguments, it is best to skirt it. Do not get involved in those B***hy” discussions where you discuss colleagues and whatever they do.

4. Maintain eye contact

Whenever you are talking about something, maintain eye contact with your colleagues. This shows that you are interested in talking to them and not doing it just for the sake of it. To many people, it comes naturally, but those with introverted personalities often face difficulty, which is why it is important to practice this habit.

5. Count the birds when angry

There come umpteen opportunities when you want to break your colleagues nose. But we cannot do that and so we snap. However, it leaves a bad impression of you on your other colleagues. So best is to control that temper. Go for a walk, count the birds around or until 100, whatever makes you cool down. Never respond with anger. Take some time.

6. Smile more

Instead of being grumpy and poker face all the time, why not stick a permanent smile on your face? A smile on your face will work wonders not just for you but also for the person who sees you with one. “Smile, it’s free therapy.”
