What is ‘daddy issues’ and how does it affect your relationships?

You may have heard this term quite often, used to describe some women’s habit of dating older men or sexually calling their partner ‘daddy.’

This has become a popular catchphrase that has been further popularized by pop culture.

It is basically about how one’s relationship with their father in childhood has impacted the person’s adolescence and relationships with others.

In such cases, the individual’s father has been absent, emotionally available or abusive during childhood.

1. Lack of role model

People whose fathers abandon them in childhood or are emotionally unavailable for them, don’t have a role model to look up to. As a result, they end up going down the wrong path, without any proper guidance to stop them from doing all sorts of bad things.

2. Frisky sexual behaviour

It has been widely observed that women whose fathers have been absent in their childhood turn towards frisky sexual behaviour such as having sex without condoms, leaning toward men who pay them no respect etc.

3. Self-esteem and confidence issues

People who experience daddy issues also suffer from intense self-esteem and confidence issues. They can’t look up to people and stand up for them easily, because they have this thought in the back of their mind that, like their father, others will also gradually leave or won’t be available for them.

4. Serious anger issues

One of the main impacts of daddy issues is the emergence of serious anger and frustration issues. People who deal with daddy issues get angry very quickly and relieve all their frustration in a very negative way on people. This can get quite toxic to the people surrounding them, unless checked.
