Everything you need to create the perfect capsule wardrobe

The term “capsule wardrobe” first came about in the 1970s after it was used by Boutique owner Susie Faux to describe mix and match basics.

According to Tan France from fab 5 a capsule wardrobe is a collection of classic pieces that work together with versatility, allowing you to create a look-after-look with just a few items.

Having a capsule wardrobe ensures that you save a whole lot of time and money in planning and picking outfits.

It is important to note that the perfect capsule always consists of items that form the foundation of your personal style.

If you don’t know where to start, here is an idea:

1. Outerwear

This could be a trench coat or a heavy coat. This is your statement piece that can be won over several outfits to pull a look together.

2. Jackets

Let’s all agree that leather jackets are cool. Get yourself a nice, quality leather jacket as they tend to give off a stylish look without putting in so much effort.

If you are not a fan of leather jackets a nice blazer can work. They are able to switch up an evening dress into a work-appropriate outfit really quick.

3. Button up shirt

These are a definite must-have in any wardrobe. They are not just meant to give off a corporate look but they can be dressed up in a fun, casual way. Invest in black and white colours or other neutral palettes as they are easier to mix and match.

4. A great fitting suit

A great suit is a must and the best part is it doesn’t have to be expensive. You can thrift a nice-looking piece and have it tailored to perfection. The plus is that the pieces can be worn in several different ways.

5. Knitwear

This is something you will need at some point in the year. With knitwear go with what works for you. If you like them long, go for it, if turtle necks make you feel like your best self, then you get it. Whatever you buy just make sure you stick with neutral colours for versatility.

6. T-shirt

These are very simple and basic assets that need to be in your wardrobe. They are very easy to pair with all, they are affordable not to mention readily available. As always remember to stick to neutral colours.

7. Denim

Everyone needs a good pair of denim jeans. Go for something subtle that you can put on as many times as you want. The thing about crazy styles like ripped or bedazzled jeans is that they make statements making it impossible to be a staple piece.

8. Dresses

Pick a dress that has classic aspects to it such as spaghetti straps and an A-line shape. But the satin dress is probably something every woman should own as it will never go out of style.
