Have you ever wondered why your child is always down with fever, cold or cough, while that one neighbourhood kid never seems to get sick at all?
Now, if you try to get to the bottom of this and approach it scientifically, it may get a little tricky and complex.
But truth be told, it is all about how well-protected your child is at the end of the day.
That said, here are some of the healthy, daily habits to teach your child so as to strengthen their immune system and avoid any encounter with illness.
1. Hand-hygiene is essential
As insignificant as it sounds, washing hands is effective to curb the spread of infections. Hand-washing is a great way to eliminate the germs and viruses that kids may contract while playing, sharing toys, touching objects, etc.. Especially if there is a virus circulating in your neighbourhood, schools or even your home, make sure your child regularly washed their hands thoroughly.
2. No touching the face
Many viruses travel and spread through airborne droplets that are coughed or sneezed into the air by the sick person. It enters another person’s body through the nose, eyes, and mouth. That said, it is important that you tell your child why it’s necessary to avoid touching the face. While it can be a task, even for adults, to stop themselves from touching the face, it is best to introduce them to hand-washing as a back-up strategy.
3. Sufficient sleep is key
Sleep routines are essential, especially for kids. Lack of sleep is often associated with a weakened immune system. Studies have shown that people who don’t get quality sleep are more likely to get sick and this goes for children too. That said, parents should ensure that their kids are getting enough sleep.
4. Be physically active
Regular exercise is extremely important to maintain one’s overall health. Exercise is known to stimulate cellular immunity, which means it helps increase the circulation of immune cells in the body. While kids do not have to indulge in intense workout routines like adults, they must be encouraged to atleast participate in activities that keep them active throughout the day.
5. Eat healthy, balanced diet
Every parent knows how important nutrition is for a child’s immune system. Having said that, bulk your child’s food plate with lots of colourful fruits and vegetables. Try to include foods rich in vitamin C, D, and fibre, which not only boosts their immune system and bone health, but also promotes good digestive health.
6. Importance of vaccination
Don’t forget the benefits of getting your child vaccinated against various illnesses including the flu. Vaccination is one of the best ways to protect kids and adults from infections and diseases. It provides the immune system with an extra layer of protection and helps the body fight foreign pathogens.
