5 foods you should never store in the freezer

The freezer is one of the most important appliances in the kitchen.

It’s very useful to store leftover food. When the food is frozen, it can be stored for a longer period than if you’d simply store it in the fridge.

But did you know there are quite a few food products you shouldn’t be storing in the freezer at all?

Read to know more about it…

1. Eggs

A lot of food products shrink when they get frozen. The opposite is true for eggs, though. Anyone who’s ever tried freezing an egg will probably have come to this conclusion: the egg will explode within its shell when it gets below a certain temperature. That makes the freezer a particularly bad place to store your eggs. If you do have to freeze eggs for whatever reason, peel them first.

2. Cheese

Cheese doesn’t freeze that bad, but it will probably lose its texture. It becomes crumbly and instead of it being easy to slice, the entire block of cheese will fall apart. If you just want to slice a simple piece of cheese to put on your bread, that’s not the result you’re aiming for. This doesn’t just go for Gouda-type cheeses, but also for French cheeses like camembert and brie. Moral of the story: don’t freeze cheese.

3. Rice

Maybe you already know that the taste of rice doesn’t exactly improve if you store it in the fridge, which might have made you think the freezer is a better place to store it. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case either. Storing rice in the freezer will only cause it to change into a tasteless, mushy mess as soon as it’s defrosted again. The best thing to do is eat the rice right after you’ve cooked it.

4. Pasta

Just like with rice, freezing pasta doesn’t exactly improve its quality. Quite the opposite, actually. Although it might seem like a good idea to cook a big pot of pasta at the start of the week to then freeze it for the coming days, you’d better not do this. Once the pasta has defrosted, it’ll lose all of its usual starchy consistency. The result? Soggy, limp pasta. Yikes. You can freeze the pasta sauce, though. So, you can make the sauce ahead of time and then cook the pasta separately each time.

5. Potatoes

Potatoes don’t need a lot of looking after, but putting them in the freezer is bound to bring you disappointment. Uncooked potatoes will take on a grainy consistency when frozen, which makes them pretty much inedible to anyone who likes a good, tasty potato. Just store them in a dark cupboard.
