December is the month of joy and festivities but that is not always the case. And this December has shown us just.

If the worrying statistics of road accidents and loss of lives are anything to go by, this highlights the reality of how lethal the roads can be during festive seasons.

With celebration taking place all over, many revellers throw caution to the wind becoming a danger to themselves and others when they take to the roads while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

This is not the time to take things lightly. You should remind yourself and your loved ones to be very careful by following these road safety tips:

1. Never drink and drive

The closer we get to Christmas, the more the drinks flow. People are bonding over a few drinks and there is nothing wrong with that.

The major risk is getting behind the wheel when you’re not sober enough. And sadly this is something that people often do this month.

If you’re planning to party, take a cab or make sure you have someone in the group that is fully sober. You can even drink with your buddies at home instead so you don’t have to worry about driving anywhere.

2. Plan your trips well

With all the travelling that’s going on right now, it’s important for people to organize themselves adequately. That includes confirming the route early and leaving the house on time.

This will give you room to get to your destination during safe hours when most drivers are alert. It also prevents the need to over speed and, you will have more time to rest in between.

3. Always have your seatbelts on

In driving school, you’re taught that one of the first things you should do is fasten your seatbelt. This rule should be followed at all times but people don’t always do that.

Wearing your belt can literally save your life in case something happens. So, don’t unbuckle your seatbelt just for a video or because you want to feel relaxed because it’s not worth it.

4. Keep your phone away

People also sometimes feel the need to record themselves or capture some photos of beautiful scenery while driving-not a good idea. That split second when your eyes are not fully on the road could be the moment when something happens which is why you shouldn’t get distracted.

You can simply request your passenger to record something you want for you instead of risking your life. If you’re alone, just wait until you arrive at your destination to take all the videos and photos you want.

5. Only book with reputable companies

If you’re using public means such as shuttles and buses, you need to protect yourself and your family by booking with companies that have a good track record. Accidents can happen once in a while but that is different from situations where it keeps happening with the same company.

Do your research to see some reviews as you decide on who you will travel with. This will help you avoid companies that are notorious for poor standards and accidents. You want to do this early so that you don’t have to choose the only option that is available when you want to travel.
