Ntsiki Mazwai has been ordered to apologise for making a statement perceived to be against transgender women.
The presenter is known to be opinionated, and the tweet that garnered the attention of people reads: “Despite the societal perceptions and attitudes that force transgender women [to] the margins of society, transgender women are women and we have always been a part of African cultures and history, and therefore will never be erased.”
Gender Dynamix released a press statement, ordering Mazwai to retract her statement and tender an apology.
“We, as organisations who exist to ensure that the human rights of all members of the LGBTIQ community are respected and upheld, call on Mazwai to remove this dangerous post and apologise to the trans community,” reads part of the statement.
“Despite societal perceptions and attitudes that force transgender women at the margins of society, transgender women are women and we have always been part of African cultures and history, and therefore our existence will never be erased,” they said.
Gender Dynamix has become aware of Ntsiki Mazwai’s posts on Twitter on 16 Jan 2023, in which she invalidates and delegitimizes transgender women. We, therefore, urge Ntsiki Mazwai to release a statement to apologize to the trans and gender-diverse community for fueling hatred. pic.twitter.com/bzlbL60Wjb
