ANC reacts to the National Shutdown protest

The African National Congress issues a statement to address the National Shutdown protest which was organised against the current government of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Julius Malema who is the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) political party organised the protest which is to fight against rolling power cuts, corruption, and unemployment.

It took place today, 20th of March and trended on social media as people shared their different opinions about it.

However, ANC frowned at the protest and appreciated South Africans who didn’t join.

“The African National Congress (ANC) expresses its gratitude to all South Africans who did not join the extremist and regressive so-called shutdown planned to take place on 20 March 2023. In South Africa, there is no place or tolerance for vigilantism and forceful removal of an incumbent government. The ANC is fully committed to doing what the people of South Africa expect, demand and deserve,” reads the statement.

“The ANC acknowledges that everyone has the right to protest, and in line with rule of law, all protest actions must be lawful,” says ANC through its spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu.

The party also labeled the National Shutdown protest as illegal.
