A guide to making pasta from scratch at home

Pasta is a world-famous Italian dish that is a comfort food for most of us. It comes in different shapes, sizes and a variety of lip-smacking sauces as well.


While it is easy to grab a packet of pasta from the grocery store, there is something special about making pasta from scratch.

If you too would love to try out making pasta dough at home, here is a detailed step-by-step recipe for you.

Making the dough

  • In a mixing bowl, add 2 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of salt. Give a mix.
  • Now crack open 1 egg into the flour and mix using a fork.
  • Once mixed, crack 2 more eggs into the bowl and again mix using a fork.
  • Once the mixture attains a dough-like consistency, take it out on a silicone mat.
  • Dust it properly with flour and knead using your hand for at least 8-10 minutes.
  • Now cover the dough with a clean cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Cutting the pasta

Now take the dough and cut it into four equal pieces. Take one piece and pass it through the pasta machine. Fold the sheet into two and again pass it through the machine. Repeat this step at least 6-8 times. Once you get a dough sheet of desired thickness, cut the pasta into your desired shape. You can make spaghetti, fettuccine, penne etc.

Boiling the pasta

Fill a pot halfway with water and let it come to a boil. Add a pinch of salt and gently drop the prepared pasta into it. Only add the pasta to the water after it has come to a boil. Cook for about 3-4 minutes or until the pasta is cooked. Drain all the water and collect the pasta in a colander. Pour a cup of cold water on the pasta and let the water drain for a few minutes. Your pasta is now ready to be used in any recipe.

Easy pasta recipe

In a pan, heat 2 tbsp olive oil. Add 1 tsp minced garlic and 1 finely chopped onion. Saute for two minutes. Now add puree of 3 tomatoes along with salt as per taste. Give a mix. Cover with a lid and let the tomatoes cook for 5-6 minutes. Now add oregano and chilli flakes as per taste. Add the cooked pasta to the pot and gently mix it with the sauce. Garnish with parmesan cheese and basil leaves. Cook for one last minute and switch off the flame. Pasta is now ready to be served.
