Being in a healthy relationship is one of the few things that helps us to calm and soothe ourselves in the fast and demanding modern-day life.

A loving and caring partner can prove to be the best companion, counsellor and strategist that one can ever find.

The feeling of loving someone and being loved back is something that all humans crave for, and the ones who get to experience this in their lifetime are truly lucky.

We, being humans, have the tendency of lying in certain situations; where we feel the need to protect ourselves. The same happens with two people when they are in a relationship.

Sometimes, such a situation arises when you do something which could hamper your bond. Consequently, in order to avoid losing your loved one, you lie to them.

Eventually, this one lie results in a hundred more lies and ultimately, they kill the relationship. It is always better to speak the truth than making up lies.

If you committed the mistake of lying to your partner, confessing that is the best and wisest thing to do.

Here are a few things that need to be kept in mind while admitting your lies to your partner.

1. Know that your partner is a smart, sensible and a sensitive person

Never have the preconceived assumption that your partner won’t understand you. If you are truthful and honest while confessing your lies, there is a high chance that your partner will at least try to understand you. Considering your partner as someone who won’t understand you won’t make anything better.

2. Don’t fight back and maintain your composure

When you have told hundreds of lies to your partner, someone who always trusted you, there might be a reaction from them. They might get angry and fight with you. It is very important to maintain your composure at that time and to try to calm down your partner. If you start fighting back, it will make things even worse.

3. Understand that no good will come out by blaming others

It is very easy and natural to blame someone else for your lies. Different people, situations, etc, can be blamed for your lies. What needs to be understood is that it was you who chose to lie. Even if you had your reasons to do so, then also it is not good to put it on others. If you dared to lie, you should also have the courage to own up to your mistakes.

4. Victimizing yourself is not the way out

When a person lies or commits a mistake, he/she often tends to victimize oneself to escape the misery of it. Victimizing yourself is a very easy task and your partner might also forgive you for your lies. But it won’t be a permanent or long term solution. Instead of victimizing yourself, confess to your lies, take your time and try to fix what you have ruined.

5. Time heals everything; have patience

When you have broken your partner’s trust, you have to understand that it will take some time for them to come out of it. During that sensitive phase, there is no point in forcing anything. There are high chances that your partner won’t believe you even when you are speaking the truth. The best thing to do in this phase is to let time do its task of healing.

6. Understand that it was you who did wrong, not your partner

If your truly love your partner, and want to stay with him, then you have to be ready for a battle. It is often said that it takes a hundred truths to build a relationship but just one lie to break it. Your partner’s behaviour is just a reaction to your actions. You can’t put everything on him/her when you are the one who broke his/her heart. It is your duty to act maturely and understand your responsibilities at that time.

7. Contemplate on the importance of the relationship

When sensitive times knock at your door, it gives you a chance to think about everything. It is a time to think about what your partner and his companionship mean to you. Even though you have committed a mistake, the guilt of it doesn’t need to overpower your rational self. Organize your thoughts and emotions and just try to make things normal.
