Ask anyone and they will instantly tell you that alcohol is bad for health and can be lead to multiple health issues. But a new study claims that this may not be entirely true. If you are a hardcore beer lover, this news will bring a wide grin on your face. Researchers have found that drinking half-a-pint of beer daily can increase your longevity.


What study says

According to a study, men who drink half-a-pint of beer every day are 81 per cent more likely to reach the milestone age as compared to non-drinkers. However, the chances of reaching the landmark age in women drinkers rise by a third.

The study

The study which was carried out by the researchers of the Maastricht University in Netherlands also revealed that men who guzzle three shots of whisky or two pints of beer daily are two-thirds more likely to reach the age of 90 as compared to people who never drink alcohol.

For the study, the researchers tracked drinking habits of 5,500 people over two decades. After analysing the data closely, they found a positive link between alcohol consumption and longevity in both men and women.

One pint of beer contains 208 calories. In general, beer contains 4 to 6 per cent of alcohol by volume (ABV). It may vary between 0.5 and 20 per cent depending on the brand of beer you are consuming. Previous studies suggest that drinking beer in moderation can improve your heart health, decrease bad cholesterol level, minimise the risk of cancer and cheer your mood.

The bottom line

If you are a non-drinker then do not start drinking on the light of this finding to live longer. It should not be used as a motivation to start drinking. Surely the study suggests that drinking half-a-pint of beer is good for health, but remember that you should drink in moderation. Excessive intake of alcohol can be dangerous for your health.
