Layoffs have been relatively common ever since the pandemic hit the world. They are quite unexpected and put you through mental pressure.
Just like any negative situation, your experience with a layoff largely depends on how you react.
You may not have deserved the layoff, but you definitely deserve a second chance at a successful career.
One thing you shouldn’t do is view the layoff as a setback. Instead, view it as an opportunity for a fresh start.
If you’re someone who’s finding it difficult to bounce back from a layoff, we’re here to help you out.
1. Give yourself some time to mourn
Did you know over 34% of people end up suffering from psychological issues like depression after they are laid off? Don’t panic and start thinking about what to do next immediately. Give yourself time to cope up with the loss of your job before you move forward with a fresh plan.
2. Assess your finances
Now that you don’t have a job and stable monthly pay, you need to start taking ultra care of your spending. Spend only on what is needed, not what is wanted. Rent, utilities and bills should be your priority in these tough times. Don’t let financial stress get to your mind and slow down your process of finding yourself a new job. Take it one day at a time.
3. Take good care of yourself
Engage in regular exercising, getting adequate sleep. Being open about your emotions will greatly help your physical and mental health. Take this time to spend it on whatever you like doing other than sleeping and eating healthy. Take up a hobby, spend time reading, writing or even painting and dancing. Whatever helps you feel better, do it.
4. Reach out to your network
Start connecting with industry pros, both online as well as offline. You will be surprised to know at almost 85% of open positions are filled through networking. When you have a good industry network, you shouldn’t hesitate in connecting with them when you’re in dire need.
5. Consider part-time work
If it’s taking too much time in finding a full-time job, don’t sit around waiting for a perfect package. Start taking up part-time jobs to get some finances coming in. There’s a whole world out there for freelance work and part-time jobs. It’s one of the best ways to generate income in the interim.
