Many people dream of traveling the world. They save up money, get going, and realize they don’t want to go back to work.
Instead, they would like to extend their time abroad and start to look for ways to earn money on the road.
With the internet, and tourism opportunities, there are ways to earn a decent amount of money while traveling and some people have even found they can make more money this way, when they realize their cost of living is a lot lower now that they don’t have a car payment or high rent.
Here are some ways to earn money while you travel:
1. Passing fliers
This is the easiest job to attain in any areas which offer parties such as Goa, Ibiza, Thailand Islands, Bali, Manali, and more. You can get paid an hourly rate to hand out fliers at markets and on the street. Typically the language you speak will not affect getting hired for this job. Hostels often give a free room in exchange for a few hours of passing out fliers.
2. Become and Au Pair
Being a nanny in Europe is a very lush job sometimes. This blogger did it in Paris and documented what it was like. You have to prepare ahead and apply online for jobs by making profiles on Au Pair websites.
3. Passive Income – renting your house
You can now easily put your apartment or house online at Airbnb and rent it out while you’re traveling to make a bit of cash. Just make it a little bit higher than what you initially had to pay each month.
4. Work on a farm
Many youngsters (under the age of 30) head to Australia or the US for a WWOFF job on a farm. The minimum wage in Australia for example is very high and you can make great money picking apples!
5. Working as a deckhand on a yacht
If you decide to take on this job, you should look into the work schedule. The work is difficult and the hours are early, but as you can imagine being on a yacht will expose you to a glamorous lifestyle and amazing beach locations. There are certifications you have to pass for this job and it’s most often offered in Europe.
6. Teaching English
This is very common in places like China and South Korea. You can get paid a very competitive rate. You’ll have to take an online course first called TEFL.
7. Stay somewhere long enough to be a tour guide
Once you feel comfortable in a city, reach out to local guide companies. This is especially good if you speak a unique language or multiple languages. Tour guides sometimes are only paid in tips, but if you have a large enough group, the tips can be substantial.
8. Freelance writing
If you’ve always been good with words you can look into writing for websites. Copywriting jobs can be found easily on most job search portals online. Pay isn’t very high most often, but if you take enough jobs you will eventually make connections for higher paying gigs.
9. Playing music
Many people take up gigs while they travel playing their songs at bars and hostels. Sometimes they even offer to play at a hostel in exchange for a room or a restaurant in exchange for food and booze. Usually this isn’t a high paying gig.
10. Sell your travel photos
You’re most likely documenting your trip anyways. You can upload your photos onto image search sites (Shutterstock, Thinkstock) and see who bites. The mundane are often what sell so no picture is worthless online!
11. Become a flight attendant
This is the one that takes time, patience, and preparation. You don’t get put on the perfect routes right away and have to work your way up. Once you do, you’ll get to see so much of the world and even get your hotels and food paid for with a stipend. Did I mention the flight discounts?
12. Affiliate sales via a website
Many bloggers are staying afloat via affiliate sales and advertisements on websites. Some travelers have up to 200 websites and keep investing in more. Johnny Ward from onestep4ward.com started with no money when he went abroad years ago, and last year he made 1 million from his websites combined. It is possible!
13. Graphic design
If you are a visual person, you can learn how to use Photoshop and do graphic design jobs online. The most common place for this is fiverr.com, where you can make fast money doing jobs for businesses and bloggers.
14. Teach a class / learn a new skill
Are you already a yoga teacher or artist? Do you have a skill you can share? If not, take a class and learn something like yoga or massage in Asia for a decent price then use these skills to earn money abroad. Many hostels and guesthouses offer a workaday program where you can stay for free if you offer classes to their guests. You can also rent a space and charge whatever you want for a class.
15. House sitting
There are many websites that are matching house sitters with people who need their house and pets watched. One that is very popular is trustedhousesitters.com and there is a membership fee. You have to sign up, make a profile, and find a match. Once you get good at this, you can housesit all over the world and stay in some of the most amazing properties for free. There are sometimes payments through house sitting if they have a lot of pets or land which needs care.
16. Working in a resort
If you work for a big multi-chain resort brand you can change locations with the seasons and see many of their resorts across the world. You’ll typically do the same job and tasks at each resort which helps them from having to train new staff.
