We all have those friends who leave no opportunity to post minute details of their relationship on social media or share status to let their virtual friends know they are in love, right?

In fact, such people are the ones who earn the envy of others and make them wonder if they are unlucky in love.

But fret not; science has some interesting opinion about these love birds. A recent study has concluded that couples who tend to post a lot on social media might be actually insecure in real life.

How a study has busted the myth

The researchers at Northwestern University surveyed around 108 couples who had listed themselves as ‘in a relationship’ on Facebook. Each participant was asked to keep a daily journal for two weeks where they mentioned about how secure they felt in their relationship and their activity on Facebook on that particular day.

Other details

Meanwhile, the researchers also kept a tab on their Facebook profile, and analysed how much time these participants spent on this social-networking platform on a regular basis and how often they post about their love life.

The finding

The research concluded that people tended to post or share more photographs of their partner or relationship on the days they were feeling romantically insecure.

Is it all because of social expectations?

Experts suggest that social-media platforms are not the best tool to understand how happy a couple is in real life. Going by the findings of another study done by Aalto University, it’s the pressure to meet societal expectations and maintain an image on social media that forces people to posts about things that might not be completely true.

Another study

The truth might be that social media is ruining our relationships and complicating our love lives. As per a study done by Havas Media, 68 per cent of its participants confessed using social media to stalk their ex-partners and half of the respondents admitted they used social media to gain the attention of their specific friends.

Virtual life vs. real life

The findings of these studies make it pretty clear that a person’s virtual life can be completely different from real life. The next time you feel irritated or jealous seeing your friend’s romantic post on your news feed, there is a high probability that person isn’t actually having a great day.
