Debate on Tyla’s race might be unending as the star’s name trends on social media since her rise to fame, and a majority of the time she trends because people are debating over her race.
In 2023, the South African singer emphatically cleared the air, however, some of her international fans and critics sparked debates by arguing once again.
The Water hitmaker trends on Twitter as she is being compared with Latto.
“Actually both of these women have told y’all they aren’t Black. Tyla explained that she is South African, she is colored. “Latto” stage name is short for Mulatto. Just because she shortened it because it’s a literal slur, doesn’t mean it’s not a word *she chose to define her,” a tweep wrote.

Tyla still not black y’all.
Them hissy fits and ahistorical takes on race and ignorance of racial caste systems in SA won’t change that.
K?
You can still like the song though.

Respectfully, this is exactly what Black Americans have been saying about Tyla.
And we were told we were “centering ourselves & monopolizing blackness” by considering her Black and not calling her coloured. So which is it? https://t.co/Snaa45s6Zy
